AND so it was, in the Beginning, that Microsoft released unto the world Windows 1.0. "All herald the new Operating System", they cried: "the most powerful and most important Operating System ever!!!"
And Users who heard the Windows gospel began Installing it. And Consultants who understood the gospel began Teaching it. And Devotees everywhere began improving it, building on it, adding to it, embellishing it.
The Operating System became revered among Users for its ability to perform magic.
Practitioners of the gospel recognised the significance of written works, and carefully transcribed the Manuals, the most holy of Operating System documents, into many forms, some of which still survive today.
Then, shortly after the Beginning, Microsoft released Windows 2.0. "All herald the new Operating System", they cried: "the most powerful and most important Operating System ever!!!"
And some of the Windows 1.0 Users, who heard the Windows 2.0 gospel, began Installing it. And some of the Windows 1.0 Consultants, who understood the Windows 2.0 gospel, began Teaching it. And some of the Windows 1.0 Devotees, who heard the Windows 2.0 gospel, began improving it, building on it, adding to it, embellishing it.

Back then, data communications were relatively primitive, and unfortunately a good deal of Windows 1.0 users did not hear, for one reason or another, of the Windows 2.0 release. They just kept on motoring on version 1 -- they didn't know any better. They had their carefully transcribed Manuals which stated quite clearly "Most Powerful and Most Important". The magic of their version was unchallenged -- as far as they knew -- so they did not waiver in their faith.
Sometime later, Microsoft rocked the boat with Windows 3.0. 32-bit computing spawned a whole new religion. "All herald the new Operating System", they cried: "the most powerful and most important Operating System ever!!!"
And some of the Windows 2.0 Users, and a few of the Windows 1.0 Users, who heard the Windows 3.0 gospel, began Installing it. And some of the Windows 2.0 Consultants, and a few of the Windows 1.0 Consultants, who understood the Windows 3.0 gospel, began Teaching it. And some of the Windows 2.0 Devotees, and a few of the Windows 1.0 Devotees, who heard the Windows 3.0 gospel, began improving it, building on it, adding to it, embellishing it.

By then, the Operating System practised by different groups of Users, Consultants, Devotees and Practitioners had far evolved from simply three different Operating Systems. Each group of people had added their own interpretations. Stories abounded. Some people had become wealthy through their own interpretations. Each Operating System had its own legion of critics and apologists, philanthropists and profiteers.
And each legion fervently believed it had "the most powerful and most important" version.
Interests formed in order to "protect" each legion's investment in the version they had. The spectre of jihad appeared -- and the Spirit of Operating Systems was lost.
Yesterday, Microsoft went out of business. Users were forced to draw their own conclusions. A few hardy fellows compared the Manuals. They could not believe their eyes when the three ancient Texts all revealed the same passage:
"Most powerful and most important Operating System ever."
How could three different Operating Systems ALL be the most powerful and most important? The Comparers sat long, comparing. Inevitably, one leapt high and shouted "The Revelation!!!" -- the others turned, tense with anticipation.
"Each Operating System was the most powerful and most important, at the time," he said.
The others mused. To them he explained: "this story is not about computers, it is about religion. However, there really is a jihad, and world belief systems really are different versions of the same story. The true identity of Microsoft, however, remains a mystery."
He then offered them this hyperlink as a basis for further discussion.
