A comparison of the behaviours of a legitimate account owner (GREEN) and a fraudster (RED) when interacting with a service provider (BLUE).
The initial approach
at the first sign of trouble, GREEN will pick up the phone and call BLUE, even if it's 3AM
RED waits until there is a problem with their plan, then makes semi-anonymous contact with BLUE (eg. via email) during business hours
this is because GREEN has nothing to fear from BLUE, while RED fears detection/identification by BLUE
The detail
GREEN will tell BLUE way too much background information about the problem, and will continue to do this until they are certain BLUE is on their side
RED tells BLUE as little as possible, often revealing detail only after RED knows BLUE already knows them, and does not mention background information
this is because GREEN can flood BLUE with the truth, while RED wants to avoid describing their scam, and/or digging themselves deeper
Response to denial
if GREEN is denied by BLUE, GREEN becomes patient but insistent, and will only make reasonable requests of BLUE
if RED is denied by BLUE, RED slinks off, before submitting another request to BLUE, that tries a new tack
this is because GREEN knows they are entitled, while RED knows they are not
Willingness to authenticate
GREEN will offer to authenticate, and will accept every opportunity to do so, especially if they need to in order to progress their plan
RED will not offer to authenticate, and will decline every opportunity to do so, even if they need to in order to progress their plan
this is because GREEN knows that passing authentication will build their case, while RED knows that failing authentication will damage their case
Ability to authenticate
GREEN will consistently authenticate, and will never say something which contradicts the truth
RED will consistently fail to authenticate, and will always say something which contradicts the truth
this is because GREEN is in possession of the correct facts, while RED is not
Willingness to sign
GREEN will be willing to sign their life away in the event of a false statement, and will sign if required
RED will not be willing to sign their life away in the event of a false statement, and will not sign if required

Involvement of lawyers
GREEN will offer the services of their own lawyer to BLUE (for free)
RED will threaten to use their lawyer to sue BLUE
this is because GREEN knows they will win their case, while RED cannot share their lawyer, as it will expose their scam
Willingness to commence legal action
GREEN will, if required, sue RED, or otherwise legally restrain RED, in order to retain control of their assets
RED will avoid every opportunity to go to court
this is because GREEN knows they will win their case, while RED knows a judge will toast them
Prey vs. Predator
in general, GREEN holds their head high but runs, screaming for help, into the brightest lights possible, so as to illuminate their plight, like a scared deer
in general, RED lurks on the fringes, like a hyena, probing for back doors, avoiding light wherever possible, and trying not to be noticed
