subject: fix: Outlook error 80040154 posted: Sat, 26 Feb 2011 00:23:41 -0000
Problem:
Outlook 2003 unable to download mail, consistently reports "Receiving
task reported error 'unknown error', error code 80040154"
Cause:
unknown
Solution:
The net says many things about this error - I fixed it by using the
Detect and Repair option in Add/Remove programs:
1. click Start.. Control Panel
2. click Add/Remove Programs
3. scroll down to Microsoft Office, then click Change
4. from the setup options screen, select Detect and Repair errors
5. follow the prompts... :)
Note: the installation media OR complete c:\MSOcache directory will
likely be required to successfully use this option.
Other things I tried first, that didn't fix it:
- inetcomm reregister (this fix came from the web, didn't work
though)
- deleting the first email in the queue using webmail
- Outlook in Safe Mode
- Windows in Safe Mode with Networking
- check Office Service Pack level (upgrade wasn't needed)
- check Windows Service Pack level (upgrade wasn't needed)
- SCANPST (inbox repair tool)
- CHKDSK /R (done by "scheduling a disk check" using Properties of
disk C:)
- remove all COM addins from Outlook
- delete tempfiles
- antivirus/spyware scan/remove
- remove unneeded software
- free up diskspace
- clean registry
Note: the SCANPST tool is found in c:\program files\common
files\system\msmapi\1033
Note: the SCANPST log is found in the same directory as the PST file -
c:\documents and settings\USERNAME\local settings\application
data\microsoft\outlook
