subject: fix: silencing Adobe Updater (reprise)

Hmm, the fix forwarded last time didn't work after all, sorry about
that! So it was back to the drawing board, I can this time report
success, after multiple reboots and waiting a week or so:

1. this doesn't work (thanks Adobe!):
http://www.cyberdelix.net/adminz/49ba828b_915_ff6d48.html

2. this works at the moment:
http://garmahis.com/tips/how-to-disable-adobe-updater/

Open this file with any text editor (Notepad) and change year value
in this line as follows: 2020-01-01

3. this apparently doesn't work (untested):
http://garmahis.com/tips/how-to-disable-adobe-updater/

c:\Documents and Settings\UserName\Local Settings\Application
Data\Adobe\Updater5
click with right mouse button and change Attributes of this file to
"Read only".

4. This was my self-devised nuclear option, which I unfortunately
didn't get to deploy:

Copy over the top of c:\Program Files\Common
Files\Adobe\Updater5\AdobeUpdater.exe
with a program that runs quickly, shows no window, exits immediately
with no user interaction and no error, and doesn't stay resident -
maybe c:\WINDOWS\system32\lights.exe

5. A less-elegant nuclear option (untested):

delete/rename dir/file

6. untested:
http://blog.stealthpuppy.com/deployment/disable-adobe-updater-with-
adobe-customization-wizard-8

REG ADD "HKLM\SOFTWARE\Policies\Adobe\Acrobat
Reader\8.0\FeatureLockdown" /v bUpdater /d 0 /t REG_DWORD /f

7. this does NOT work (thanks Adobe!):
http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewContent.do?externalId=331261

"Disable Adobe Updater

To disable Adobe Updater:

1. Copy the following 3 lines and paste them into a Notepad document:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Adobe\Updater]

"Enterprise"=dword:00000001

2. Save the document as "DisableAUM_Updates.reg."

3. Close and then double-click this file, and the Windows registry
will import this information automatically.

Note: If you have additional Adobe CS2 applications these steps will
disable the Adobe Updater for all Adobe applications. It cannot be
disabled per application."

I suspect there are multiple versions of the Updater deployed, with
differing behaviours, and consequently a fix which works for one
version, may not work for another.
