subject: fix: silencing Adobe Updater
posted: Fri, 13 Mar 2009 15:58:03 -0000

Problem:

You want to disable the automatic check for updates performed by
Adobe Reader and possibly other Adobe applications. However you
cannot find a control in the Reader preferences. When the updater
window comes up, all you see is an error message and a cancel button -
you have no way to disable the automatic check.

If it cannot find an internet connection, the Updater may be
consuming 100% of CPU.

Solution:

1. Using Notepad or another text editor, open \Documents and
Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application
Data\Adobe\Updater5\AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat

2. If the 1 tag already exists, thenchange the
value from 1 to 0. Otherwise, add the line 0
anywhere between the tags.

3. Save the file and exit the editor
