You want to disable the automatic check for updates performed by
Adobe Reader and possibly other Adobe applications. However you
cannot find a control in the Reader preferences. When the updater
window comes up, all you see is an error message and a cancel button -
you have no way to disable the automatic check.
If it cannot find an internet connection, the Updater may be
consuming 100% of CPU.
Solution:
1. Using Notepad or another text editor, open \Documents and
Settings\[username]\Local Settings\Application
Data\Adobe\Updater5\AdobeUpdaterPrefs.dat
2. If the 1 tag already exists, thenchange the
value from 1 to 0. Otherwise, add the line 0 anywhere between the tags.
