Installing the Windows Desktop Update onto NT4 is difficult: the
option is hidden on the setup menu, and thus requires a special
commandline, and the installer often attempts to download extra
components from M$, which always fails.
First, the special commandline that should install WDU if all the
components are present in the setup directory:
ie6setup.exe /c:"ie6wzd /e:IE4Shell_NTx86 /I:Y"
If it tries to download extra components, and fails, do this:
1. first, install IE6 as usual
2. then restart the install - but don't go past the first screen
3. while the first screen is still open (typical/custom), go to the
tempdir ...
4. go into the directory called IXP000.TMP
5. open the file "iesetup.cif" in Notepad
6. go to the section [IE4Shell_NTx86]
7. set the entry "UIVisible" to 1
8. Save the file
9. continue the installation
10. select "windows desktop update" from the list of components
(deselect all other components)
11. install and reboot
Installing WDU in this way might corrupt NT's security settings: if,
after WDU is installed, selecting View .. Folder Options in Windows
Explorer produces a message 'this operation has been cancelled due to
restrictions on this computer', repair the IE6 configuration with
this:
