subject: XP private folder hacks

Righto,

So you've got a customer with an employee who's left. They had an XP
Pro workstation and used the option "make my files private". You
don't know their login password.

When you login as Administrator and attempt to access their files,
you get 'access denied'.

Here's two ways to fix ...

METHOD 1: take control of the folder (and all child objects)

To do this, follow the instructions here:
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=308421

If the Security tab is not visible, you must first disable simple
file sharing by using the Tools .. Folder Options .. View tab of
Windows Explorer.

METHOD 2: change the user's password

When you login as Administrator and attempt to change the user's
password using the MMC, you get a message telling you that proceeding
to change this user's password will result in data loss.

Therefore, do not use the MMC to change the password. Use the
command

NET USER username *

to reset the user's password. This does not corrupt or delete their
data and you can then login as them, and access their files.

You must be Administrator to reset the password.

Don't have access to the admin account? Use this linux bootdisk to
reset the XP admin password:

http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

Can't see the Administrator account on the XP welcome screen? It's
hidden. Press Crtl-Alt-Del TWICE to display a conventional login
window, in which you can enter any username, including Administrator.

Gotta love that XP security!

Stu
