April 2003: well, well. It turned out CD’s aren’t so great. For reasons still unknown,
my “utils” CD has stopped working. This CD, which was full, contained all of the
cool tools and utilities I have collected since I started using computers. It even had
a copy (for posterity) of Qedit.. it had all of my “tech” directory, containing drivers
and utilities for every pertinent item of hardware I’d used; it had all my cracks and
my virus collection and my collection of wardiallers, portscanners, and traffic
sniffers on there. It also held my network tools, and file viewers and converters.
This loss is only mitigated by the fact that the CD was so useful, I have made two
subsets of it, and there are new versions of a number of the titles in the “to burn”
directory. But still…. Say around half will never reappear – another 300Mb of data
lost forever. Lesson to be learned: burn two copies of my important CDs? It
seems the CD’s “Table Of Contents” track was scratched, meaning the whole CD
became instantly inaccessible. If the scratch was on some other place of the CD,
only certain files would fail to read. But with the TOC AWOL, the CD is FUBAR.
If anyone has a copy of my "utils" CD, please speak up! :|
