instructions for using telnet to play with your POP mailbox
(substitute your server for mail.space.net.au)

-----Original Message-----

Here are some instructions for telnetting into your mailbox. It is
useful for deleting excessively large emails or emails that you have
already received.

To start the session go to the Start button, then to Run and type in
'telnet mail.space.net.au 110' (do not type in the commas)

You should then see something like;

+OK space.net v1.31 1998/05/13 POP3d ready
<[email protected]>

Click on Terminal, then Preferences then Local Echo and click OK
Type in 'user ' then hit enter Type in 'pass
' then hit enter

You should then see this;

+OK

Congratulations! If you see this; -ERR cucipop: Invalid password or
username (check case) repeat the user/pass steps.

Note, the mail server is very fussy, you can't make a
mistake and backspace over it, it won't work. If, during the login
process, you make more then two mistakes, start over from the
begining.

To see a list of the emails, type 'list', you will then see something
like;

+OK 3 messages (21034 octets) 1 2508 2 16615 3 1911 4
34566694 The command for deleting files is 'dele'. To do this you
type 'dele ', eg 'dele 4' and hit enter. If you type a
command in incorrectly, you will see something like this; -ERR
Invalid command, try one of: STAT, LIST [msg], RETR msg, TOP
msg n, DELE ms g, UIDL [msg], NOOP, RSET, QUIT Another
useful command is 'top'. If you type 'top
' you will see the specified number of lines of that
number email. eg, 'top 1 10'. There is a lot of cryptic looking
information there but you should be able to see who the email was
from.
